Make It Your Business to Fight the Flu

No one looks forward to flu season, but it's a time of year that is especially challenging for employers. When one employee comes down with the flu, it's usually only a matter of time before most of the workforce starts calling in sick. Projects stall. Productivity levels plummet. And once that happens, all you can do is wait for the flu virus to run its course.

Because of the recognized risk flu season presents, many employers are now taking a proactive approach to protecting employees against seasonal flu. One effective plan is to offer a workplace flu clinic. Offering a clinic in the workplace makes it easy for employees to get immunized without taking the time to find one on their own or scheduling a doctor's visit.

According to the CDC, the flu costs businesses $10.4 billion in direct costs annually, so it's a wise business decision to host an onsite flu vaccine clinic. More employee participation leads to fewer employees sick with the flu, less sick time paid, less absenteeism and ultimately more productivity.

For more information about hosting a workplace flu clinic, download the CDC's Seasonal Flu Vaccine Toolkit for Businesses and Employers.

Have you ever clicked on an intriguing ad or link while surfing the Web and had a barrage of pop-up windows flood your screen or your browser suddenly send you to a slew of unsavory sites? Or have you ever installed a free download and noticed that your computer is suddenly sluggish because, unbeknownst to you, a program is now tracking your online movements?

Spyware and Adware

Spyware usually finds its way onto your computer without your knowledge or permission. It runs in the background, collecting information or monitoring your activities. A lot of spyware harvests information related to your computer and how you use it.

reprinted with permission from the Microsoft Business Hub

Every small business wants motivated employees. They are more efficient and produce better results. Using monetary and other rewards to improve motivation is a simple idea, but doing it fairly and effectively can be challenging.

The majority of small businesses "distribute payments to whoever is the golden child of the week," says Daniel P. Moynihan, a principal and senior consultant at Compensation Resources in Upper Saddle River, N.J.

How can you create a compensation program that motivates employees, results in a more productive staff, and is administered fairly and effectively? The secret, it seems, lies in the details. Here are four steps to follow.

Map an Address in Outlook 2010

Microsoft Outlook 2010 can do more than just store your contact information. It can also locate a contact and provide directions using Bing Maps. If you have entered a complete address for a person or business in your contact list, it takes just a few clicks to bring up a map for that location.

  1. Click Contacts in the lower-left corner of the Outlook window.

  2. Double-click the contact in the list of contacts that appears.
  3. Select Business, Home, or Other (if you have multiple addresses stored) from the drop-down menu beneath the Addresses heading of the window that appears.
  4. Click the Map It button to the right of the address.

The Map It feature is very useful if you frequently travel for business. This feature makes it very simple to find your clients locations on Bing Maps and get driving directions.
